Adults and Parents are provided services in the following: Community Engagement Family Engagement Financial Literacy Literacy Health and Wellness Parenting Classes STEM Arts & Crafts/ Cultural Arts Visual Arts Jazz Band
Parents are contacted through home visits or phone contact to assess their needs and the needs of their child by the Family Involvement Coordinator - Parent Workshops are established based on parent and student needs - Parents are provided the opportunity to participate in four workshops scheduled throughout the school year - Classes and workshops are partnered with various community partners to ensure appropriate wrap around services are available. - Twice per year students have the opportunity to exhibit and perform for their families by showcasing something they have learned during their enrichment clubs - Job Fairs are scheduled for parents to attend at the end of the parenting workshops
Research shows that when families are engaged, student outcomes, such as attendance, behavior, and achievement, improve. This article opens with a definition of family engagement in after-school and then presents a research-based rationale for why family engagement is an essential component of after-school and summer learning programs.
Family engagement in after-school programs can be leveraged to improve family engagement in learning in and out of school. Specifically, studies have found that family engagement in after-school programs can lead to greater involvement in school events, increased assistance with homework, and more encouragement for reading.
